This program provides a practical, ethics-centered walkthrough of proper trust accounting practices, with particular emphasis on the required three-way trust reconciliation process. Participants will learn to distinguish between trust and operating accounts, understand why commingling and mismanagement of client funds are among the most common causes of disciplinary action, and identify the specific records and controls necessary to remain compliant with applicable rules of professional conduct.
Through step-by-step instruction and illustrative examples, the course explains each component of a three-way reconciliation—the trust bank statement, trust account register, and individual client ledgers—and demonstrates how discrepancies arise, how to investigate them, and how to properly document corrective actions. The program also highlights common trust accounting pitfalls, audit and recordkeeping expectations, reconciliation frequency requirements, and the ethical risks of relying solely on technology without adequate attorney oversight.
